Throughout the world, a combination of coagulation, sedimentation and filtration is the most widely applied water treatment technology, and has been used since the early 20th century. Coagulation is an important part in raw water treatment to reduce organic matter, stains, turbidity, and microorganism levels. Coagulation is a process that enable the removal of suspended solids from the raw water via formation of micro flocs upon addition of coagulant. Coagulation also helps to improve the appearance of raw water, turning it from varying shades of brown to crystal clear. Wastewater treatment operations also require coagulation, e.g. for chemical phosphorus removal and for reducing suspended solids. In a water treatment facility, the coagulant is added to the water and it is rapidly mixed, so that the coagulant is circulated throughout the water.
Coagulation is a critical step because it determines the efficiency of all processes that follow and influence not only the treated potable water quality but also the economics of treated water production. In Malaysia, one of the common coagulant for potable drinking water treatment plants is Poly Aluminum Chloride (PACApplication of PAC in a coagulation process can successfully remove a large amount of organic compounds, and inorganic precipitates such as iron.
